Ketogenic Diet FAQ

The Keto Diet or Ketogenic Diet is a great way to start losing weight to get your body into a healthier state. However, the term ketosis and keto are not words we learned growing up so it can be a lot confusing as to what the Ketogenic Diet is.

I’ve put together a list of common ketogenic diet faq’s to help you with your new lifestyle on the Keto Diet.

What is the Keto Diet?

The Keto Diet is a way of eating that restricts carb consumption, focuses on increasing healthy fats and a moderate amount of protein in your diet. The aim is to get your body into a metabolic state called ketosis where your body burns stored fat in your cells for energy instead of burning carbs that you eat. Ketones are created in the process and are used as fuel to keep your body going. By burning your bodies stored fat instead of carbs, you lose weight in the process.

What do you eat on a Keto Diet?

On a Keto Diet you can eat more healthy fats like avocados, coconut oil, fatty fish like salmon and shellfish, peanut butter, cruciferous veggies like cauliflower and broccoli, low sugar fruits like berries, cheeses, butter, bacon, and an assortment of fattier foods. You will eliminate carb heavy foods like breads, chips, and sugary foods like candy, cookies and the like. The goal is to reduce unhealthy foods that spike blood sugar levels and create a no-win situation for fat loss.

How do I start a Keto Diet?

The #1 priority when starting the Keto Diet is to reduce your intake of carbs. You’ll want to find a meal plan that shows you how to start eating differently and gives you room to have healthy, Keto friendly snacks during the day. While you are changing the way you eat, you’ll want to add more physical activity to your schedule, drink plenty of water and test your ketone levels with ketone strips so you can see how your body is adjusting to the new diet. You’ll adjust your carb intake to a level that ensures you are in ketosis on a daily basis.

Is the Keto Diet Safe?

The Keto Diet has undergone many studies that show it is helpful for obese people and others who may be overweight. Experts say ketosis isn’t harmful for the most part, or at all. Here is a list of studies you can read to learn more about the safety of the Keto Diet and if you think it would be an effective weight loss option for you:

  3. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25402637

How long does it take for the Keto Diet to Work?

If you are eating less than 50 grams of carbs a day you should get into ketosis in less than 5 days or so. A lot depends upon your eating plan, your age, whether you are getting enough fats and proteins as well. Your bodies metabolism can affect ketosis and so can how dedicated you are to not “cheating” by eating carb heavy foods.

How much weight can you lose on a Keto Diet?

If you stick to the Keto Diet you can lose on average a lot of water weight in the first month. Your body will start shedding the water stored in your cells as you decrease your calorie intake. To help your body lose weight faster, you can try restricting your eating window to only 10 hours a day. You can also add in HIIT exercise to help your body burn calories faster. If you are gung-ho on keto, you can lose a lot of weight fast. To keep it off, you will need to keep a healthy lifestyle and keep up the HIIT exercise. You may hit a weight-loss plateau where your body won’t lose more weight – learn how to overcome a weight loss plateau here.

Is peanut butter Keto?

Peanut butter that is all natural and organic is acceptable on the Keto Diet. My Santa Cruz Organic peanut butter has 16g fat, 8g protein, 1g total sugars, and 2g net carbs (Total carbs 5g – 3g fiber = 2g net carbs) in 2 tbsp serving. I like to add it to smoothies or eat it with celery. It’s a great way to add protein and fat to your ketogenic diet.

Why am I not losing weight on the Keto Diet?

The #1 reason people don’t lose weight on a Keto Diet is because they are eating too many carbs. There are hidden carbs in most foods we eat so you really need to follow a good meal plan to get the hidden carbs out of your diet.  Learn how to add Exogenous Ketones to your diet to help boost your body getting into ketosis.

Can you have a cheat day on the Keto Diet?

On the Keto Diet you cannot have a cheat day. Really. If you have a cheat day you will likely kick your body out of ketosis and make it harder to get back into ketosis. Why risk it? Stick to your Keto Diet plan and find ways to add yummy foods into your Keto Diet.

Can you drink alcohol on the Keto Diet?

You can drink some alcohols on the Keto Diet. Vodka, gin, rum, tequila and whiskey are all keto friendly options. They don’t have any carbs and can be drunk on ice or with seltzer waters. Add in some keto friendly sweeteners if you don’t want to drink it solo and some keto friendly fruits or coconut milk to make them tropical. You’ll have to do some research on what you mix in, but you can create keto friendly alcoholic drinks.

Keto Questions: Difference Between MCT Oil and Coconut Oil?

difference between mct oil and coconut oil

What is the Difference Between MCT Oil and Coconut Oil?

Everyone who has tried their hand at dieting, from seasoned athletes to fathers looking to rid themselves of “the dad bod”, has heard the term “saturated fat.” Our understanding of saturated fats has been that they are to be avoided at all costs.

However, recent research shows that saturated fats from the right sources are an essential dietary staple, and as a consequence of our misunderstanding, they are missing from most western diets.

Thankfully, there are easily found sources of healthy saturated fat in almost every supermarket and health store, namely mct and coconut oils.

So, what is the difference between mct oil and coconut oil?

Well, the difference is the same as that of sugar cane to sugar.

Coconut oil is a source of mct’s (or medium chain triglycerides) which are saturated fatty acids that carry health benefits from improved cognition to increased fat burning.

Essentially, mct oils are a more concentrated source of mct’s than coconut oil.

Categorical differences aside, many of you are probably still asking what is the difference between mct oil and coconut oil as it relates to your diet. The differences mostly rely on your specific diet.

For instance, if you are on a general diet plan that calls to cut back on unhealthy fat sources, coconut oil is a great source of mct’s that won’t break the bank.

On the other hand, serious athletes and dieters with a set goal in mind should stick to concentrated mct oils. This is due to the fact that coconut oils often contain high levels of lauric acid, which has health benefits but is present in unknown quantities and does not provide the same level of more useful mct’s as do mct oils.

In short, the answer to the question what is the difference between mct oil and coconut oil is, not much. Coconut oil is filtered down and concentrated into mct oil, and for the bulk of us, coconut oil will serve just fine.

For the minority of us with advanced dieting techniques or demands, mct oil is more reliably measurable and should be used over coconut oil.

Keto Questions: What Does MCT Oil Do For You?

What Does MCT Oil Do For You

What Does MCT Oil Do For You?

MCT Oil helps you lose weight, stay focused, and have more energy by providing your body with medium chain triglycerides which easily convert into energy in your body rather than store up in your cells as fat.

MCTs go straight to your liver and are converted into energy instantly or ketone bodies. And, because MCTs are more efficiently burned by the body, they are less likely to be stored as fat and are also used by the brain as energy.

Athletes are known to use MCTs or medium chain tryglcerides as a nutritional support during work outs and training. And MCT’s are used to decrease body fat and increase lean muscle mass.

MCT oil helps your metabolism burn fat by offering your body a fuel source that fills you up. MCTs help cut cravings, and help keep your blood sugar from spiking. MCTs can be found in coconut oil – that’s why ketogenic dieters use coconut oil in their coffee – or extracted from palm or coconut oil via fractionation. MCT oil is a must-have ketogenic dieters dream ingredient for weight loss and weight control.

Benefits of MCT Oil

1. Encourage alertness by providing fuel to the brain
2. Reduce sugar cravings
3. Optimal weight maintenace due to satiation
4. Increased metabolism
5. Increased energy
6. Increased brain function
7. Help with absorption of fat soluble nutrients
8. MCTs are great to consume on a keto diet because of the fat burning aspects – some say you can increase your carb intake if you consume MCT oil

How Much MCT Oil Should I Take?

When you just start to use MCT oil on a ketogenic diet, try using 1 tablespoon a day for a month. You can mix MCT oil into your coffee with butter to make a bulletproof coffee, or you can mix it into other beverages for a kick start to your day.

MCT oil is generally flavorless so it won’t interfere with the flavor of what you eat. MCT oil is a big step in the right direction for fat loss and will help kick start ketosis. Make an MCT ketogenic diet plan to kick start and keep yourself in ketosis first thing in the morning.

Where Can I Get MCT Oil?

You can buy MCT oil online or get it through your natural foods store. I recommend reading reviews of MCT oil brands on Amazon to find out which one has the reviews you are comfortable with. I haven’t personally used MCT oil, but I do make bulletproof coffee with coconut oil and find that I am fuller longer in the morning and don’t need to eat a full meal until lunch time.

  • 100% pure premium MCT oil with lauric acid, harvested from coconuts. Onnit MCT Oil is sustainably sourced and contains no palm oil, the leading constituent in most MCT oils. Free of fillers, additives, and flavoring.
  • MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) are a beneficial fat that's easily converted into fuel in the form of ketones, one of the brain's primary sources of energy as well as a vital source of ATP energy for the body. Onnit MCT oil is excellent for those adhering to a ketogenic diet, which utilizes fats rather than carbs for energy, a state known as ketosis. MCT oil is a perfect supplement for other low carb diets, like the Paleo diet, and for weight management support.
  • Onnit MCT Oil is tasteless and odorless, making it great for smoothies, protein shakes, salad dressings, unheated sauces, and more. Not recommended for use with styrofoam or any other foam-based material.
  • Great with coffee. Onnit MCT oil is a bulletproof way to turn your morning cup of Joe into a creamy, delicious source of sustained energy for the day, supporting mental focus and clarity. Organic, Non-GMO, Vegan-Friendly.
  • A superior alternative to coconut oil for MCTs. Coconut oil is great, but it contains relatively small quantities of MCT's, particularly C8 (Caprylic Acid) and C10 (Capric Acid). These two forms of MCT are especially valuable because they take fewer steps to convert to caloric energy than the other saturated fat forms found in coconut oil.

Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting – What are they?

So what exactly is Intermittent Fasting? This is one of the first questions we should answer before combining Intermittent Fasting with the Ketogenic Diet.

Intermittent Fasting is just a fancy way of saying you’re rescheduling your meal plan to look more like a broke college aged individual. It’s basically skipping breakfast and moving your lunch and dinner times to a slightly later time than you are probably used to eating.

Instead of grabbing lunch at 11:00 or 12:00, push the time back to 1:00 p.m. and then grab dinner around 6:00 or 7:00 pm. This will allow your body ample time to go from processing your last meal, into a fasting state, to realizing that it needs to start burning fat.

A good rule of thumb to remember with intermittent fasting is that your body starts fasting twelve hours after your last meal, and once your body cues into this fact (because you are fasting) it starts to actually burn the fat that has been stored in your body.

Technically, Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating and of scheduling your meals so that you eat during a specific period of time, a window of time, and get your entire day’s worth of calories stuffed into that time frame. Some people fast for 18 hours and eat for 6, others fast for 20 and eat for 4. Regardless of how long you fast, the goal is to shorten the window of calorie intake to maximize fat burning during a prolonged fasted state.

Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting

The whole point of the Ketogenic Diet is to help your body become more efficient at burning fat by reducing insulin spikes which are going to cause your body to store more fat. So combining the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting is a win-win for your weight loss goals.

The present study shows the beneficial effects of a long-term ketogenic diet. It significantly reduced the body weight and body mass index of the patients. Furthermore, it decreased the level of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose, and increased the level of HDL cholesterol. Administering a ketogenic diet for a relatively longer period of time did not produce any significant side effects in the patients. Therefore, the present study confirms that it is safe to use a ketogenic diet for a longer period of time than previously demonstrated. – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2716748/

Another bonus of combining the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting is the fact that you won’t *feel* like you’re fasting since you should experience satiation when you have the green light to eat.

Another thing about when you start combining the Keto Diet and Intermittent Fasting is that when you aren’t in the process of fasting, you are still trying to get the same caloric content as when you were eating 3 square meals a day or 5 smaller meals spaced throughout the day.

Some cool things about combining the relatively simple meal plan of the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent fasting are:

  • You get to sleep in (kinda, because you prolonged your first meal – unfortunately you don’t get the extra sleep!)
  • You get larger portions at meal time because you are cramming your calories into a shorter window – so gobble up!
  • Fasting has been shown to actually increase how long you live. I know, it sounds strange, but check out the Scientific Americans article on the subject. While it doesn’t go to say that it will extend your years it DOES say that your incidence of disease is far lower while fasting, and should extend your feelings of healthiness into old age.
  • You’re saving money by not buying enough for a meal plan with several meals everyday.
  • Combining the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting for weight loss is a turbo charged way to get thinner faster.

ketogenic diet and intermittent fastingOverall combining the Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting should help increase your brain function, shrink your waistline, improve skin condition.

It will cause your body to react to insulin in a more regular manner which should reduce your chance of type 2 diabetes or help you maintain your target blood-sugar level, and help your body get rid of damaged cells.

Ketogenic Diet FAQ

What Does a Ketogenic Diet Consist Of

What Does a Ketogenic Diet Consist Of?

A ketogenic diet consists of eating a low-carb, high-fat diet to lose weight. To start a ketogenic diet you will want to limit your carb intake and increase your fat intake with healthy fats. The fats that most western diets include is unhealthy fat, or trans-fats, also called partially hydrogenated oil. Read food labels to see what kind of fat it includes before buying. You’ll want your ketogenic diet to consist of healthy fats. Healthy fats include fat from coconut oil, avocados, eggs, butter, and grass-fed meat and diary. How Many Carbs Per Day to Stay in Ketosis?

You’ll want to eat less than 50g of net carbs per day. Your carbs should come from vegetables, nuts and seeds and keto friendly fruit. Less than 50g of net carbs each day is enough for most people to stay in ketosis. Make sure to get your carbs from vegetables (10-15g), nuts and seeds (5-10g), and fruits (5-10g). When reading food labels in the US, subtract the fiber content of the food from the total carbs to get your net carb count. This will give you the carb count of the food so you can add it to your daily tally.

Switching From Keto to Normal Diet – What’s the Process?

If you’ve been on a keto diet for some time and have lost weight, but you are perhaps struggling with the macros & tracking food… what can you do to switch from keto to a normal diet? I recommend trying a more paleo diet and/or eating a diet of healthy foods – do not buy any food that’s in boxes… continue watching your carb count, but don’t stress about the foods you eat if you are #1 – eating real foods & #2 exercising more than 30 minutes per day. The best way to get back into a normal diet, and not gain weight, is to keep up with the aspects of a healthy diet that you’ve adopted, and stay away from all garbage foods with garbage carbs.

Can You Eat Fruit on a Ketogenic Diet?

Yes, and no. You can eat fruit on a ketogenic diet, but it’s not a simple proposition. One way to go about eating fruit is to use the “size matters” rule. The smaller the fruit, the better it should be for a ketogenic diet. Think berries. Blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and so on. Bananas are chock full of carbs, apples, apricots, cantaloupe, watermelon, clementine oranges, kiwi fruit and so on make it hard to stay under 30 carbs per day and stay in ketosis with a normal ketogenic diet. Ruled.me has a great list of fruits and info that will answer your burning question: Can you eat fruit on a ketogenic diet?

How Many Days to Get into Ketosis?

Generally it takes a few days to get into ketosis if you strictly adhere to a ketogenic diet meal plan. If you deviate and eat sugary foods, high carb snacks or get your macros off, you’ll likely not hit ketosis – ever.

Struggling to get into ketosis? Try adding exogenous ketones to your diet.

Some people find it more difficult to enter ketosis, or they can’t get into ketosis without a prolonged keto flu period, or their body is so used to eating garbage that they struggle with becoming keto adapted.

Exogenous ketones usually help most people step into ketosis faster. If you are having a problem entering ketosis or want to give yourself more ketone fuel, exogenous ketone supplements are a great way to boost ketones in your blood stream. Read our article on Exogenous Ketones to learn more about how exogenous ketone supplements can help you get into ketosis faster and help most people eliminate the keto flu faster.

What are Ketones?

Ketones are a chemical your body produces when on a restricted diet that focuses on low carb, high fat foods. By putting your body in a state that feels like starvation, your body will produce ketones naturally. Ketones are utilized as a fuel source, a fat burning source, and make your body more efficient.

Exogenous ketones are made by scientists in a lab and turned into an ingestible product so that you can accelerate ketosis faster in your body. By adding exogenous ketones (or ketone supplements) to your diet, you are giving yourself a kickstart to ketosis – an opportunity to function at a more efficient fuel burning level.

What is the Keto Flu?

The keto flu is your body’s response to the withdrawal of carbohydrates from your diet. It’s the transition period your body goes through when learning to burn stored body fat (instead of chips, white bread, pizza and sodas) for fuel causes you to experience flu-like symptoms that make you feel absolutely lousy for a few days. The keto flu usually lasts only a few days to a week depending upon factors like how addicted to carbs your body is, how fast you dive into the keto diet, how much fat you eat and so on.

To mitigate the keto flu, eat more healthy fat, keep protein lower, supplement your water with electrolytes, drink a lot more water than you have been, and exercise til you sweat a lot. Then drink more water with electrolyte supplements ( I’ve purchased and used this product – LyteShow ) added so that you get back what you’ve lost. You can also add exogenous ketones to your diet which will add ketones to your body faster and helps most people achieve ketosis more quickly.

What’s the Fastest Way to Get Your Body into Ketosis?

Getting your body into ketosis is a pretty straightforward process that people tend to over complicate. But basically if you follow the below steps you’ll get your body into ketosis pretty quickly.

  • Reduce and restrict your carbohydrates to below 20g per day when just starting a ketogenic diet. Limit carbs to this number for the first month and then gradually increase carbs while monitoring your body with ketosis sticks.
  • Limit your protein intake because too much protein can lead to lower levels of ketosis. You’ll want to stick between 0.6 and 0.8 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass. A 150lb person needs to eat approx 120 grams of protein a day… which could be a daily intake of the following: 1 4oz hamburger (33g), 2 scoops of protein powder (30g per scoop), 4 slices of bacon (17g or approx 4g per slice) and 2 hard boiled eggs (6.3g each egg) if just meats.. of course the rest of what you eat has protein in it so be sure to keep up with your macros, read food labels and write everything down. Don’t eat too much protein as it can affect ketosis.
  • Eat more fat. Because your body will rely upon fat as the primary source of energy on a ketogenic diet, make sure you get anough fat in your diet. Don’t starve yourself of the fats you need to live and lose weight.
  • Get more water than you would have normally on a non-ketogenic diet. Water is the stuff of life, and it will help curb your food cravings. Drink water first thing in the morning… and then drink it all day long. Stay hyrdrated!
  • Combine the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting.
  • Exercise – at least half an hour daily!

Is the Ketogenic Diet Safe?

This is a huge question for everyone starting a new diet for weight loss, especially when it takes you outside the norm of what you are used to doing. The ketogenic diet runs counter to the USDA food pyramid, is completely unlike your normal eating routine and poses a few challenges for those who don’t cook at home most of the time. But, the studies that are out there do support that the ketogenic diet is a safe way to approach weight loss and health.

How to Start a Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss?

To start a ketogenic diet for weight loss, wean yourself off the foods you normally eat for about 30 days. Drink more water and ditch sodas, start replacing those bags of chips you munch on at lunch, dinner, and tv time with healthier versions of themselves. Begin to re-balance your dinner plate so it has 2/3 greens, 1/3 proteins and give yourself some time to cleanse the carbs from your diet before jumping into the ketogenic diet cold turkey.
